Windsor is the southernmost major city in Canada and lies in southewestern Ontario at the western end of the heavily populated Quebec City - Windsor corridor. Windsor is south of Detroit and is separated from that city by the Detroit river. Originally, Windsor was settled in 1749 as a French agricultural settlement and is the oldest continually inhabited area in Canada west of Montreal. The city itself was founded in 1892.
Windsor has a population of 216,473 (2006) in the city and 323,342 (2006) in the metro area. Over 20% of the population is foreign born making it the fourth most culturally diverse city in Canada and second in Ontario only to Toronto. Windsor has a fairly mild climate with a mean annual temperature of 9.5 C (49 F). The area is often referred to as the "Sunshine Coast" with approximately 223 days a year of "short sleeve weather".
Real Estate in Windsor is very affordable with an average sale price of approximately $157,000. This makes it a very reasonable place to live for the average family. The Windsor Essex County area or 100 Mile Peninsula as it has become known is also a haven for retirees because of affordability, the wide spectrum of activities, and the proximity to the U.S. border.
